U.S. Mint offers 2011 Army Commemorative Coins

The U.S. Mint has released three custom army coins this year commemorating the U.S. Army.

The coins showcase the Army’s commitment to safeguarding our nation and promoting its core values around the world. Surcharges from the sale of the limited edition coins will be used by the Army Historical Foundation to help finance the National Museum of the United States Army.

2011 U.S. Mint Army Commemorative Coins

The $5 coin, minted in gold, symbolizes the Army’s war service from its founding in 1775 to the present day. The obverse features five soldiers – one from the Continental Army, one from the Civil War, one each from World War I and World War II, and in the center, a modern soldier. The reverse features the official Army emblem, including the words “This We’ll Defend.”  Production is limited to 100,000 custom coins.

The silver dollar features the busts of a male and female soldier, symbolizing worldwide deployment in the 21st century. The reverse showcases the Army’s core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and courage. Production is limited to 500,000 coins.

The clad half-dollar showcases the Army’s peacetime contributions to the country’s advancement and well-being. The obverse depicts a soldier surveying, two servicemen building a floodwall and an Army Redstone rocket used in the early years of U.S. exploration of space. The reverse features a Continental soldier with a musket and 13 stars to represent the original colonies. Production is limited to 750,000 coins.
